After forcing Union General George McClellan's retreat across the Virginia Peninsula, Confederate General Robert E. Lee strove to destroy the Federal army on July 1, 1862. Lee's plan was poorly conceived and executed, resulting in heavy Confederate casualties. McClellan was able to escape to Harrison's Landing. The Peninsula Campaign was now over, and Richmond had been saved from capture.
