If there is one magical time of year in Newport News, it's the fall season. The trees dress gloriously in bright hues of red, green and yellow along our trails. Not to mention the fun wave of festivals that occur October-November to help us enjoy the mild temperatures. To help you experience fall in Newport News to the fullest, we've put together a list of the fun activities you can look forward to in the upcoming weeks. Enjoy!
1. 46th Annual Newport News Fall Festival - October 5-6
Coastal Virginia’s biggest traditional craft show, the Newport News Fall Festival has been held in Newport News Park since 1974. Celebrate fall with more than 200 craftspeople showcasing traditional crafts and trades, demonstrations, folk music, and the many sights, sounds, and memories that have been passed down from generation to generation. 2. Harvest Faire: Peninsula's Oldest Renaissance Festival - October 11-13
Celebrating their 25th year, Harvest Faire is a modern interpretation of a late 15th-century European fall harvest celebration and tournament at Endview Plantation. Entertainers and a market mix with the sounds of good-natured martial competition and the smells of period cooking. Watch a craftsperson plying their trade, try your hand at games of chance and skill, and cheer for the warrior of your choice at the Field of Honors. Learn More.
3. 14th Annual Port Warwick Art & Sculpture Festival - October 12-13
Found at Styron Square in Port Warwick, nationally recognized artists showcase a full spectrum of original works. With live music, family art activities, and gourmet food vendors, the Port Warwick Art & Sculpture Festival continues to be recognized as one of the best and most talked-about fine art and sculpture shows in the Mid-Atlantic Region. 4. The Noland Trail Marathon Relay - October 13
The Noland Trail Marathon & Relay will give runners the opportunity to race the ONLY event run on the beautiful Noland Trail in The Mariners’ Museum Park. Runners can take on this challenging run solo, or team up with friends and do it as a relay. This event will take place prior to the Mariners' ARRtober Festival kickoff! Learn More
5. The Mariners' ARRRtober Festival - October 13
The Mariners’ ARRRtober Festival is a family-friendly event, featuring live music, craft beer tastings, food trucks, pirate storytelling, Scallywag School, hayrides, and more! The Festival portion will begin at 1:00 PM, and will feature food trucks, live music, craft beer, cider and wine tastings, and lots of family-friendly games and activities. Entrance to the Festival is $2 per person. Children 3 and under are free. Most activities are included with Festival admission. Craft Beer tasting tickets are sold separately. Learn More.
6. Newport News Greek Festival, Fall Edition - October 17-19
Sponsored by the Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, the fall edition of Newport News Greek Festival brings tasty Greek dishes, music and dancing for thousands to enjoy. Listen to authentic Greek music and watch traditional folk dancing while enjoying food specialties such as moussaka, spanakopita, pastitsio, and mouth-watering pastries. Learn More.
7. Night of the Living Museum – October 18-19
Get ready for a “wild” night of spooky animals, trail walks, pumpkin carving, pirates and princesses! Night of the Living Museum returns to the Virginia Living Museum for its 20th year this October. Dress up as your favorite character or wild animal as you trick-or-treat throughout the museum’s themed galleries filled with characters and decorations! This is a not-too-spooky Halloween event, perfect for families during the Halloween season. Learn More.
8. City Center Oyster Roast - October 25
Presented by Newport News Parks, Recreation & Tourism, this festival of oysters and Chesapeake Bay seafood is a local favorite! Enjoy music by Slapnation, local seafood, beverages and activities. Parking and admission are free. Learn more
9. 16th Annual Virginia Fall Classic - October 25-27
Cars, especially the old classics, will remain a passion for automobile enthusiasts for years to come – and as long as there are enthusiasts, there will be car shows! The Virginia Fall Classic is a 3-day event that includes Trunk-or-Treat, Tidewater Virginia’s premier Car-Truck Bike Show, Poker Run, dinner, music, and more. Each year’s event draws thousands of spectators and hundreds of vehicles. The event raises thousands of dollars for CHKD in Norfolk. Enjoy food vendors, a children’s area, demonstrations and more. 10. City Center Fall Fest - 26 (rain date - 10/27)
Come and enjoy free hayrides, free crafts, face painting, live music and more! Adults can savor ample tastings of craft beer, hard cider, and wine. 11. Virginia Living Museum Oyster Roast - November 9
Enjoy all-you-can-eat fresh local Virginia oysters, fried seafood, chowder, dessert buffet, craft beers, wine, full bar, DJ/live music, commemorative glass, raffles & more at the Virginia Living Museum’s eighth annual Oyster Roast!
