Description

Learn about the history of Lebanon Christian Church and its original church building, built in 1859 and used by both the Confederate and Union armies during the Civil War. Enjoy tours of the 1859 sanctuary, interpretive tables, and activities for all ages. Civil War reenactors from Shades of Our Past will portray Dr. Charles Coleman of the 3rd Virginia Cavalry, a camp nurse, and surgeon’s mate. They will discuss Civil War military camp life, camp conditions, health concerns, and medical care for soldiers. J. Michael Moore with the city’s Historic Services division will discuss the role of the Lebanon Church building as a courier station during the Peninsula Campaign and other military campaigns during the Civil War. Moore will also be the keynote speaker for a noon program in the sanctuary, which will honor Lebanon's founder, Maria Whitaker Curtis of Historic Endview, and other early founders. The program is free, but donations of nonperishable food items will be collected for Thrive Peninsula. Call 757-887-5536 for details.
