Union Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman’s flanking maneuvers had forced Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston to fall back toward Atlanta in the Spring of 1864. Johnston formed a defensive perimeter at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, which prompted Sherman to order a large frontal assault that failed. Nevertheless, Sherman was able to flank the Confederate position forcing Johnston to fall back to just 15 miles from Atlanta.
