Take a Driving Tour of Outdoor Art in Newport News

Itching to get out of the house? Use your car as your own personal “escape” shuttle to discover some cool outdoor art in Newport News!

Before you head out, though, take a few minutes to download the Newport News Public Art Foundation’s audio tour app. With this cell phone app, you’ll be able to take a personal tour of 20 sculptures, with the artists themselves as your guide! You’ll actually hear the artists, in their own words, tell about their work – how and why it was created, what the artist was thinking, what he or she was trying to accomplish, and what they would like you to see in it. You can also request a physical brochure by filling out this form or calling the Visitor Center at (757) 886-7777.

"Selene"

No smartphone? No problem! A downloadable brochure, which lists nearly three dozen works of art, is also available. This brochure is one of Newport News Tourism’s most popular offerings, with at least 25,000 distributed annually. The brochure features 35 sculptures, each corresponding to a number on a map of Newport News. GPS coordinates are available for each to make finding its exact location a cinch.

"Hammer Tribute"

Art enthusiasts will marvel at the complex and beautiful sculptures that are so exceptionally crafted. History lovers will be fascinated by the reproduction of “Leifr Eiriksson, Son of Iceland” and the sculpture of Capt. Christopher Newport, for whom the City of Newport News is thought to be named.

"Victory Arch"

Since 1919, when the original Victory Arch was dedicated, Newport News has had a proud heritage of outdoor art for the public to enjoy. From The Unfinished March in the city’s Southeast Community to The Handshake marking the entrance to City Center at Oyster Point and Healing Christ on the grounds of Mary Immaculate Hospital, it will be easy to practice social distancing while discovering a unique way to experience Newport News!
