Also known as First Bull Run, Manassas was the first major land battle of the Civil War. Both the Federals and the Confederates clamored to capture each other’s capital to put a quick end to the war. General Irvin McDowell led an inexperienced Union force to attack the equally unseasoned Confederate force commanded by Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard. The Federal flank attack failed when Confederate force, led by Gen. Thomas J. Jackson, from the Shenandoah Valley, blocked the Union attack and forced them into a rout. The resulting 3,000-plus casualties made it clear that this would be a long war.
