At the height of America's use of coal to heat homes, ore extracted from Appalachian coalfields was shipped eastward by train to the coast for distribution and was an essential national commodity. The gangs who labored to extract it from the deep mines were ill treated and poorly paid. The Coal Wars of West Virginia were the result of harsh economic exploitation of miners who performed this dangerous work. A costumed interpreter will interact with visitors to discuss the life of a coal miner working in dangerous conditions and the hardships he and his family would have had to endure. A variety of fun children's activities and refreshments will be part of the program. Included with regular museum admission. For more details, click here.
