Description

Celebrating the one-year anniversary of the grand opening of the Mary M. Torggler Fine Arts Center, we are delighted to present the works of legendary photographer, environmentalist and musician Ansel Adams this fall with the exhibition: Ansel Adams: Compositions in Nature.

Renowned for his iconic black-and-white prints of landscapes throughout the United States, Adams’ (1902 - 1984) striking compositions and techniques have amazed audiences for generations and elevated photography as an art form throughout the 20th century. His thoughtful use of light and shadow highlight often-forgotten and overlooked beauty in the natural world, inviting viewers to focus on patterns, textures and contrasting components that would otherwise pass us by. A lifelong advocate for environmental protection, Adams’ prints celebrate the magnificence of nature to share its importance with us all. Featuring more than 70 works, this exhibition presents Adams’ most renowned works as well as rare and never-before-seen photographs. Complementing the exhibition are Adams’ own recordings of classical music, highlighting another one of his passions, as visitors are met with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the wonder of the American wilderness. This exhibition is organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Turtle Bay Exploration Park, Redding, California, managed by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles.
