VIRTUAL LECTURE

Presented by Ron Lewis, docent at The Mariners’ Museum

About the presentation:
Among the jewels of The Mariners’ Museum Collection are the miniature ships of August F. and Winnifred Crabtree. From a primitive raft to a Venetian galleon decorated with 359 carved figures, the evolution of the sailing ship in three dimensions is depicted in an unparalleled display of craftsmanship. Around 1925, artist/carver August Fletcher Crabtree began this work, and with help from his wife, Winnifred, Crabtree created this extraordinary miniature fleet, completed in 1949. In 1955, the Museum became the fortunate recipient of this world class collection. Come along on this insider’s look into this gallery, a visit to the oceans and harbors of the world’s waters. And see, in 1/48th scale, the ships that wrote our history and enhanced our culture for thousands of years and brought man to the 21st century — the miniature ships of master woodcarver August Crabtree.
