One of the most successful Confederate commerce raiders, CSS Florida, attacked Northern merchant ships throughout the Atlantic Ocean. Lieutenant John Newland Maffitt captained the sloop of war until illness forced him to turn over command to Lt. Charles Morris. But the raider was captured by the USS Wachusetts in Bahia, Brazil. Later, Florida was sunk off Newport News Point, Virginia, on November 28, 1864.

The lecture will be held in a classroom in the Museum. Please confirm room location upon check in at Visitor Services. Reserving a seat is suggested as seating is limited.
