Once General George McClellan had encamped his army at Harrison's Landing, General Robert E. Lee decided to move against a new Federal army being organized in northern Virginia. General John Pope's Army of Virginia was outflanked by General T. J. “Stonewall” Jackson's command, which was then followed by James Longstreet's wing. Longstreet's attack on August 30, 1862, was the largest simultaneous assault of the Civil War and gave the Confederates a major victory.
