One of the foremost Confederate generals and nicknamed by Robert E. Lee as his “Old War Horse,” James “Pete” Longstreet, an 1842 graduate of West Point, served with distinction during the Mexican War. He proved himself to be an outstanding corps commander, providing decisive leadership during battles such as Fredericksburg and Chickamauga. Longstreet was badly wounded during the Battle of the Wilderness. He was with General Lee at Appomattox.
