The June 6, 1862 battle of Memphis actually began when the Confederate Defense Fleet surprised the Union Mississippi Squadron near Fort Pillow, Tennessee, on May 10, 1862. The Confederate rams sank two Union ironclads, USS Mound City and USS Cincinnati. The Federals struck back as the citizens of Memphis watched. The Confederate squadron was totally destroyed, enabling the Union to move closer toward Vicksburg.
