Our Favorite Fall 2011 Events

Are you tired of the heat and humidity? Are you ready for the milder temperatures and the cool breeze that fall brings? It won't be long before the leaves on our trees turn a magnificent orange, red and yellow.  Nothing compares to the color of autumn leaves at the peak of their splendor, so get outside and enjoy it while you can!

It's easy to enjoy the great outdoors in Newport News. Opportunities for hiking, biking, picnicking, fishing, archery, camping, boating, golfing - and even disc golf - abound in one or more of our 32 parks. And how many of you knew we also have a 5-Star archery range and a 30-acre aero-model flying field, both located in Newport News Park?

The park is also the perfect setting for some our favorite fall events, like the 38th Annual Newport News Fall Festival the first weekend in October (Oct. 1-2).  Later in the month, Newport News Park will host the 9th Annual Virginia Fall Classic (Oct. 22), which typically attracts hundreds of vehicles and thousands of spectators.

Another great setting for outdoor fun can be found at the 7th Annual Port Warwick Art & Sculpture Festival (Oct. 8-9) at Styron Square in Port Warwick. Two other popular events have Fountain Plaza at City Center as their backdrop: Vineyards by the Fountain on Oct. 8 (which features wine tasting along with beer sampling) and the annual City Center Oyster Roast on Oct. 21.

For a little nighttime fall fun, take advantage of the free admission being offered at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 by the Virginia Living Museum in celebration of "International Observe the Moon Night." The event includes a live viewing of Earth's natural satellite AND the opportunity to touch an actual moon rock!

Whether you live nearby or just need a refreshing weekend getaway from it all, call the Newport News Visitor Center at (888) 493-7386 for additional ideas or visit our website at www.newport-news.org, where you'll find all the information necessary to take advantage of our amazing fall season!
