Expand20th Annual Celebration in Lights
November 22, 2012 - January 1, 2013, 5:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.

Light up your holidays with the award-winning Celebration in Lights, a two-mile drive-through of spectacular animated scenes set in Newport News Park. Over 700,000 lights illuminate the beauty of Newport News Park’s forests, fields, and ponds in this, Virginia’s longest running drive-through light event. View multi-colored snowflakes, leaping reindeer, whimsical toys, forest animals, elegant swans and scenes from Virginia’s past portrayed in a kaleidoscope of dazzling color for the holiday season. Over 200 displays, including 70 animated displays, are spread throughout a dozen theme areas, including “Winter Wonderland,” “Forest Friends,” “Battle of the Ironclads,” “Santa’s Enchanted Kingdom” and “Old Man Winter.” In celebration of its 20th year, the event will add a new 300’ long animated tunnel of lights creating the effect of falling snow and a new 22’ tree near the main entrance.  On each Friday night, the first 500 vehicles will receive a promotional give-a-way gift (give-a-way items vary, distribution while supplies last each Friday night). $10 per car; $60 per bus.

ExpandThe Night Before Christmas Puppet Show

Start the holiday season with a sneak preview of Rainbow Puppet’s new show, “The Night Before Christmas.” This brand new re-telling of the holiday classic features narration by legendary entertainer Mickey Rooney and an original score by Rainbow Puppet Productions founder David Messick. Rainbow Puppets is donating the performances in honor of its 35th anniversary and to help the Virginia Living Museum recover from flood damage. Shows at noon, 1 and 2pm. Included in museum admission.

This celebrated adaptation by Charles Jones is rich with thrilling ensemble music and alive with color and movement. Featuring a cast of 24, live musicians and Broadway-style scenery and costumes, audiences cherish this sumptuous annual holiday classic. A full array of traditional Christmas carols is woven into the classic story of Ebenezer Scrooge, but musical arrangements courtesy of John Bennett are contemporary and exquisitely beautiful. This production is the most widely produced production of Dickens' in the nation, and tells this great and enduring tale in a manner that people of all ages will enjoy.

Dave Koz and Friends Christmas Tour 2012, a cherished holiday tradition marking its 15th anniversary, is an uplifting, high-energy show the whole family will love. Get into the holiday spirit as some of music’s biggest and brightest names jam on fresh, lively arrangements of seasonal favorites, led by multi-Grammy nominee and saxophonist extraordinaire Dave Koz. Joining Dave this year will be Grammy-nominated pianist/composer David Benoit, Javier Colon, winner of the inaugural season of NBC's hit television show, “The Voice,” and the inimitable drummer/percussionist/vocalist Sheila E., who has toured with artists such as Prince, Cyndi Lauper and Ringo Starr. Joining these special guests will be singer/songwriter Margo Rey. Finbar Wright, Anthony Kearns, and Ronan Tynan have been touring as The Irish Tenors since 1998. Their faces and voices are familiar to PBS audiences through several specials, including the “Ellis Island” recordings that sold a million CDs and DVDs. We Three Kings is their best-selling Christmas album and includes superb Christmas gems which will be featured during this legendary holiday tour. Generations of families who love their music and the special sparkle that marks their holiday have made attending the Irish Tenors’ Christmas shows a tradition. Moreover, they’ve proven themselves gifted interpreters of a wide range of material, with such songs as My Heart Will Go On (from Titanic) and Fairytale Of New York (previously recorded by Kirsty MacColl and The Pogues). These songs live comfortably in their repertoire alongside Danny Boy,Whiskey in the Jar and Fields Of Athenry.
