9. Where did Newport News get its name?

No one knows for sure where Newport News got its name, but “Newportes Newes” first appears in the Virginia Company records in 1619, making it one of the oldest place names in the New World. The most widely accepted folktale is that our city is the namesake of Captain Christopher Newport, commander of Susan Constant, flagship of the three ship English fleet that landed on Jamestown Island in 1607. He made several voyages to Newport News in the early days of the Jamestown Colony, bringing "good news" of supplies and settlers.

Ships can be viewed from many spots along downtown Newport News including Victory Landing Park which adjoins the Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Integration Center building; at Northrop Grumman Newport News (formerly Newport News Shipbuilding) as well as the Monitor-Merrimac Overlook and the James River Bridge. Various cruise operations do offer tours from the water, please contact the Visitor Center or the Tourism Development Office for more information.

 

11. I want to go to the Ship Yard - where is it in Newport News? Do you have a tour?
Northrop Grumman Newport News (formerly Newport News Shipbuilding) is located at 4101 Washington Avenue, Newport News, VA 23607. Due to security restrictions, tours of the ship yard are not available at this time. You may visit Victory Landing Park. Various cruise operations do offer tours from the water, please contact the Visitor Center or the Tourism Development Office for more information.

Currently, the three largest full service meeting spaces are located at the Newport News Marriott at City Center Hotel and Conference Center, Omni Newport News Hotel and Point Plaza Suites at City Center. Please contact the Visitor Center or the Tourism Development Office for more information.

None; Newport News became an independent city in 1896. In 1958, the city merged with Warwick County.

 

18. Where can I rent boats and get a fishing license in Newport News?
Jon boat, canoe and paddleboat rentals are available at the Newport News Park Campsite Office, located at 13564 Jefferson Avenue. Please call 757-886-7912 or 888-3333 for more information.

 

19. I was born in Newport News. Where can I get a birth/death certificate?
Certified copies of birth and death certificates for individuals who were born or died in Newport News are issued by the Virginia Department of Public Health, Office of Vital Records, Post Office Box 1000, Richmond, VA 23208, (804) 662-6200. A fee is charged for each copy requested. Applications for birth and death certificates may be obtained from: Peninsula Health Center, 416 J. 20. We are moving to Newport News. Where can I obtain relocation information?
The Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce provides information on the area regarding homes, apartments, schools, hospitals, day care centers, taxes, utilities, local colleges and universities. The history and a detailed street map of the Peninsula are also included. Cost: $8.00 (tax & postage included). 21. Can you give me all the hotels overlooking the ocean? Or water?
At this time, we do not have waterfront hotel properties in Newport News. However, we do have a full-service Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. Located in City Center at Oyster Point, the hotel features rooms overlooking an a five-acre fountain.
